Spirit of Zen – Meditation & Somatic Movement – Fall Practice Period
Facilitated by Melissa Berry Appleton
This fall practice period bridges the close relatedness of both seated meditation, and intentional somatic movement. Weekly sessions include trauma informed meditation, grounding exercises, soothing movement patterns, sound, breathwork, and being in dialogue with our bodies. This in an opportunity for curious exploration, engaging with felt sense, and interoception – our capacity to sense and feel what is happening inside the body. Gentle Zen Buddhist meditation forms infused with compassion based practices will guide each session.
Fall practice period is great for all bodies and is specifically designed to support front-line workers and care providers (yes, this includes parents and people working in customer service positions). These practices support those experiencing burnout, anxiety and/or on the path of recovery from the intensities of 21 century living. It’s also an opportunity to experience the deep commitent and support of meditation in community.
Suitable for beginners, those seasoned in meditation practice and wonderful for yoga teachers who want to deepen spiritual formation through commitment to the discipline of meditation.
Melissa is lay-ordained in the Soto Zen Buddhist lineage by Roshi Joan Halifax and a Masters of Clinical Psychology Counselling Candidate. She is a Chaplain in residence with Third Space Charity and a new Chaplain in residence at the University of British Columbia. She specializes in working with front-line workers, care providers and creatives, both locally and in workshops and retreats around the world. With interest in gathering diversity whenever she teachers, Melissa is most content when the room is attended by all expressions of gender, sexual orientation and race.  Please reach out if you are experiencing any barriers to practice.
